Considéré comme le père de l'affiche moderne, l'artiste autodidacte italien Leonetto Cappiello (1875 – 1942) a modernisé l'affiche publicitaire et l'a transformée en objet de collection. Cappiello a commencé en tant que caricaturiste avant de devenir l'artiste européen le plus acclamé du début du XXe siècle, pilier du mouvement Art déco. Il parvenait à associer des produits à des images mémorables et poignantes. Au cours de ses 40 ans de carrière, il a créé 1 000 affiches originales pour des boissons, des spectacles de ballet, des livres, des pièces de théâtre, des voyages et des salles de concert. Les techniques de Cappiello sont toujours largement employées pour les affiches publicitaires d'aujourd'hui.
